IPTV EPG Setup: Get the TV Guide Working
The EPG is the on-screen programme guide — the grid showing what's on now and next. It's what turns a raw channel list into something that feels like proper television, and it's also the single most common thing to arrive broken. Either it's blank, or every programme is showing at the wrong time.
Both are fixable in a couple of minutes once you know what's actually happening.
- With an Xtream login the guide usually loads itself. With M3U you add an EPG URL separately.
- Guide data uses the XMLTV format, and times inside it are stored in UTC.
- Wrong times = a timezone offset setting, not corrupt data.
- Blank guide = a bad or changed EPG URL, a failed refresh, or app cache.
Where guide data comes from
Your channel list and your guide data are two separate things. The channels come from your playlist or login; the programme information comes from an XMLTV file — an open standard for TV listings that nearly every IPTV app understands. XMLTV has been the common format for decades.
That separation is why you can have perfect channels and no guide at all. They arrive independently.
Adding an EPG URL
If you're on an Xtream Codes login, the guide normally arrives automatically with everything else — nothing to do. If it hasn't, or you're using M3U, you add it manually:
- Get the XMLTV EPG URL from your provider (it's usually in the welcome email, or ask support).
- In your player, go to Settings → EPG.
- Choose to add a source (often a + button).
- Paste the URL exactly.
- Save, then trigger a refresh and give it a few minutes — guide files are large and take time to download and parse.
Be patient on that last step. A big XMLTV file on a Firestick can take a couple of minutes on first load, and people often conclude it's broken while it's still working.
Fixing a blank guide
Work through these in order:
- Wrong or dead URL. EPG URLs change. If yours returns nothing, ask your provider for the current one — this is the most common cause by far.
- A silently failed refresh. The scheduled update failed and the app didn't tell you. Trigger a manual refresh.
- Corrupted app cache. Clear the app's cache (device Settings → Apps → your player → Clear cache), then refresh the EPG again.
- Mismatched channel IDs. If some channels have guide data and others don't, the
tvg-idtags in your playlist don't match the IDs in the XMLTV file. That's a provider-side mismatch — report it rather than reinstalling. Our M3U file guide explains those tags.
Fixing wrong times
XMLTV files hold programme times in UTC, and your app converts them to local time. So a guide showing everything an hour out during British Summer Time isn’t corrupt — the conversion is just off.
Fix it in this order: set your device timezone to Automatic in system settings, then set the EPG Time Offset in your player back to 0. That solves it for most people, because the app was double-correcting. Only if it’s still wrong should you apply a manual offset — if the guide runs an hour ahead, set -1 (some apps want minutes, so -60).
The classic UK version of this appears twice a year when the clocks change and an app doesn't pick it up. Setting the device to automatic time and the app offset to zero is almost always the correct end state.
Why the guide matters more than people expect
A working EPG is the difference between browsing television and hunting through a list of channel names. It's also what enables catch-up and recording features in the players that support them — both rely on knowing what was on and when.
It's worth judging a provider on, too. A properly populated guide across the whole line-up signals a service that's been set up carefully. A blank or patchy guide usually means corners were cut elsewhere as well. Our guide to judging providers covers similar signals.
